The book in itself is informative, since there exists no other study like his. Having read the original Asperger thesis, however, I found her book disappointing, if not infuriating. In her translation, Frith left out the first most important pages that explained how the pediatrician and pedagogue, H.A., reached his diagnosis of autism, which he concluded not necessarily to be a psychological but a genetic disorder only to be ameliorated by pedagogic measures. In her own accompanying article, Fith criticized the descriptions of his autistic subjects as being too harsh. Has he characterized one of his boys as "malicious," she tried to correct this with "aloof." What? Hitting, spitting and kicking would be "aloof?" Fith appears to have little understanding of what autism is all about. Her efforts in this and later writings focussed on protecting autistics from the bullying of others (don't say anything nasty about them). In sharp contrasts, Hans Asperger's efforts had been teaching them to become functioning and employable adults, not victims. Incidentally, and for the lack of another term, autistics can be very malicious. The only reservation one could raise, they do not get the emotional consequences of their actions, namely the pain the other feels because of their actions.Product details

This book is a must-read for those who are interested in understanding the origins of and distinctions between autism spectrum diagnoses. Contains the very first translation of Hans Asperger's original paper.
This book is an extremely dry read (as you should expect). The insights are reflective of the time and yet it is very insightful and enlightening. I am very pleased with this book. It opened my eyes to my son's condition and allowed for better understanding. It is written by medical professional(s) so some medical terminology knowlege is helpful. It is very insightful to see issues that Asperger's patients had and how they dealt with it. Very helpful!

If you read about Asperger syndrome, then you will inevitably come across references to Uta Frith and her translation of Hans Asperger's original work. After reading about this book so much I felt I had to read the source, and it was a very worthwhile read. It is amazing how many times I've read what amounts to something paraphrasing things in this book without explicitly citing it as a source in addition to the countless times I've seen this book specifically referenced.
This is a classic piece of work on Aspergers Syndrome written long before the many current works on this subject. The original paper on Aspergers is included in this book,and is unavailable elsewhere as far as I know. When I purchased this book, I immediately understood one of my children who is an Aspie, and was finally able to adjust my actions and approach to fit with his needs. Sure,there are many books on this subject now, but this is where understanding began, and it still has a lot to say.
